One semi-related downside was I listened to an audiobook version and really wish the reader knew how to pronounce Japanese words as there was a fair bit, and even names which were so badly distorted it was really distracted even pronouncing things like "tofu" akin to "tofyu"?! We are also given an insight into lives during the war, the rebuilding of lives afterward and then an insight into immigration.

Like so many women of her generation she worked hard and was fiercely protective of her family to the point of selflessness - a true unsung hero of her era. I was so impressed by this book, the short chapters that capture moments in time that resonate and shape character.
